WOOD STREET (0) Analouge / DCC

This layout was built by  a small group of O gauge modellers in the SMRC club. The layout’s location is based loosely on the industrial area of Old Town in Swindon which used to have to have rail access until the early seventies.

Fisher Bridge (N) Analouge

Fisher Bridge is an N-Gauge layout.

The layout has split level tracks with twin tracks at highest level, and twin tracks at the lowest level with two loops. The layout is usually ran as a blue diesel era, but has ran LNER, GWR stock (STEAM) and even some occasions with american outline trains.

900mm x 4.800m long. An operator space of min 900mm is required behind the layout. 3 operaters required plus 2 cars for transit.

Clarkesville (G) Analouge

Clarksville is a G gauge layout depicting an American short line. The layout can be configured as a straight line or an L shape layout. The area depicted is rural

America where the railway is struggling to survive financially and the township it serves is past its peak. The total length in a straight line format is 12m long x 1m wide at its widest point, In an L shape format the long part of the L measures 8m and the short leg 6m long. Operation is from the front.

Transport is via a Transit type van and a minimum of 3/ 4 operators are required. The line is operated by a variety of locomotives inclusive of Shays, Porters and they transport a variety of timber/freight cars and open wagons. At one end trains are reversed via a turntable, and at the other end the line terminates in a shed/fiddle area.

Matley (N) Analouge

Matley is a N Gauge layout depicting an English rural line.

The total length in a straight line format is 7ft long x 1ft wide at its widest point. Operation is from behind the layout. The line is operated by a variety of locomotives and freight wagons. At one end trains are bought into a station, and at the other end the line terminates in a shed/fiddle area. The layout currently uses elecro magnets for hands free coupling, and the points are operated using wire in tube. The layout has a generic theme to allow for a range of club members stock to run. Operaters and layout travels is one car.

Hillside View (N) Analouge

Hillside New York is based on a short line in New York State where most of the income is from a major production company, where logs are turned into lumber for the building industry. The short line uses diesel traction power purchased second hand by New York Central as the future of the line hangs in the balance. Some additional traffic is generated due to congestion on the more direct main lines and this just about makes the line viable.

The visible area depicts a wood working factory with rail access, which connects to the double track main lines and a little used old style station. The layout measures 1.9m x .65m and is N gauge. The layout is operated from the rear, and .9m is required behind the layout for the operators. It fits in one car with 2 operators who are required to operate the layout during the day.

Most N gauge layouts which I have seen with terminal roads also have at least one through road to allow for continuous running. I was determined to build a model of a main line terminus with no through running, basically because I have never seen it done before. This, then, was the embryonic idea behind the layout.

After pouring over endless books, articles and magazines. I came across a track plan of a terminus which allowed trains to arrive and depart simultaneously from any adjacent platform. This plan was to be the basis of the layout, with my own ideas and modifications added. It allows plenty of movement and operational scope to maintain the interest of the operators and viewers alike.

Trains are driven from the storage sidings to Castle Park and vice versa. The working colour light signals control all the movement on the layout and each signal has a repeater on the appropriate control panel to aid the operator. Things have been arranged so that a train must be accepted by either operator before it can be complete the journey, and so makes operating very interesting!

The track plan is an imaginary one. Castle Park is approached by three roads – UP and Down Main and a relief road (the inner track on the curve) which is also the road to the rolling stock stabling area. The loco MPD is accessed from the relief line and is situated adjacent to the throat of the station. The MPD is a recent addition to the layout which has been added since the layout first appearance at MODRAIL 1995.

The plain track is Peco standard ‘N’ gauge track, and all the point work, which has live frogs, is hand built by myself. The pointwork in the station throat has been built as one complete unit, which I feel adds to the running quality over it.

The period modelled is the 1980s and early 90s to allow the use of blue diesels although the many and varied liveries which we have today are creeping in. I sincerely hope that you enjoy watching trains at Castle Park.
